Life is a journey

Director: Viviana M. Calderón de la Barca

Life is a journey, a short documentary involving four women different in both age and culture, share the same experience on their cultural identity and the sense of belonging after their migration journey. Viviana, the director, shares Hala’s story, a war refugee from Syria, by reflecting on her own relocation journey and of the two other women she met in the Netherlands. Life is a journey explores questions such as: is our understanding of cultural identity blind to cultural pluralism? Is it linear-active? Has the controversial mood of cultural protectionism ever been successful? And, is a person’s cultural identity strictly determined by their place of birth? The answer may definitely not surprise you. It really depends on the viewer.
